IntroductionEinleitung

Bukele used the script he designed to draw up lists of places, names and family trees for accounting, not to write down coherent texts. He first taught the writing technique to his friends and relatives, and it was subsequently taught in several schools.
Today’s Liberia is a multi-ethnic country with a changeful history. Apart from the Vai, the Bassa, Mende, Kpelle and Loma peoples living in Liberia have developed their own writing systems, and other scripts have been developed in neighbouring countries. The forerunner of these writing systems was the script of the Vai. The use of the scripts, however, remains locally restricted to this day; the Latin script has become the standard in Liberia, just as English has become the lingua franca.
