Japanese is a moraic language, composed of mostly open syllables of equal duration (moras). In the 9th century, following the system of the Man’yōgana, separate simplified characters were developed for the moras of Japanese, the Kana. Two sets of Kana were developed, which are still in use today in addition to the Chinese Kanjis. The cursive form of the Kana is called Hiragana and is used mainly for prefixes and suffixes, particles and numerous Japanese words for which there is no Kanji. The second form, which consists more of straight lines, is called Katakana and is used for foreign words.

Japanisch ist eine Moren­sprache, die sich aus offenen Silben gleicher Dauer (Moren) zusammen­setzt. Im 9. Jahrhundert wurden nach dem System der Man’yōgana eigene, vereinfachte Zeichen für die Moren des Japanischen entwickelt, die Kana. Die kursive Form nennt sich Hiragana und wird vor allem für Prä- und Suffixe, Partikel und zahlreiche japanische Wörter verwendet, für die es kein Kanji gibt. Die zweite Form, die eher aus geraden Linien besteht, heißt Katakana und wird für Fremdworte benutzt.
