The Zapotecs, who rose to power in the late Mesoamerican preclassic period following the decline of the Olmec civilization, established an empire centered around Monte Albán in present-day Oaxaca in Mexico. The Zapotec stone reliefs from Monte Albán date from 500 BCE to 700 CE, which makes it the earliest complete script in the Americas so far. A connection between this writing system and Olmec symbols is a matter of debate, but it is likely that the development of the writing system in Monte Albán was influenced by the Olmecs. Presumably, the Zapotec Script has developed into the scripts of the Toltecs, Mixtecs, and Aztecs.
Die Zapoteken, die in der späten vorklassischen Zeit Mesoamerikas nach dem Niedergang der Olmeken-Zivilisation an die Macht kamen, errichteten ein Reich um Monte Albán im heutigen Oaxaca in Mexiko als Zentrum. Die zapotekischen Steinreliefs aus Monte Albán stammen aus der Zeit von 500 v.d.Z. bis 700 n.d.Z. und gelten damit bislang als die älteste vollständige Schrift Amerikas. Die Zapotekische Schrift hat sich vermutlich weiterentwickelt zu den Schriften der Tolteken, Mixteken und Azteken.
