The Voynich Manuscript, named after its Polish discoverer, is a manuscript illustrated with fantastical images. It is thought to have been written in northern Italy in the early 15th century. The text has not yet been deciphered; neither the script nor the language is known. The numerous illustrations suggest that the manuscript is organised into distinct thematic sections. The script runs from left to right and consists of around 20 to 30 glyphs; it is therefore thought to be an alphabetic script. Word length, letter distribution and frequency correspond to those of a natural language; however, there are frequent word repetitions, which suggests either an artistic text or a coding system, or perhaps even text that is completely devoid of meaning. There have been countless, as yet unsuccessful, attempts to decipher the manuscript.

Das nach seinem polnischen Entdecker benannte Voynich-Manuskript ist ein mit fantastischen Bildern illustriertes Manuskript. Es wurde vermutlich Anfang des 15ten Jahrhunderts in Norditalien verfasst. Der Text ist nicht verständlich, sowohl die Schrift als auch die Sprache sind nicht bekannt. Anhand der zahlreichen Abbildungen lässt sich eine Gliederung in einzelne Themenabschnitte erkennen. Die Schrift ist rechtsläufig und besteht aus etwa 20 bis 30 Glyphen, es ist also vermutlich eine Alphabetschrift. Wortlänge, Buchstabenverteilung und -häufigkeit entsprechen einer natürlichen Sprache, allerdings gibt es stellenweise häufige Wortwiederholungen, was entweder auf einen künstlerischen Text oder auf eine Kodierung, vielleicht sogar auf komplett sinnfreien Text hindeutet. Es gibt unzählige, bisher erfolglose Entzifferungsversuche des Manuskripts.
